ONENESS IN DIVERSITY

An expression of harmony

During the Bhakti period from the 13th to 17th century, diverse spiritual mentors across the Indian subcontinent raised their voices to strengthen social, cultural, and interfaith harmony. Discarding perils of divisiveness & thoughtless practices, they focused on principles of Oneness. However, the outreach of their philosophies remained limited to their respective geographies as, in those times, messages were transmitted only through oral traditions. Guru Nanak, born 1469 is an embodiment of Oneness, who during his extensive travels across Asia, visited the Dargah of Baba Farid at Pakpattan and documented Baba Farid’s sabads (verses) which were being sung at the shrine since the 13th century. Following the vision of Guru Nanak, his fifth successor, Guru Arjan, compiled the ‘Guru Granth Sahib’ and included sabads (verses) of diverse spiritual mentors from across the Indian subcontinent. During that time, when there was no printing press or internet to transmit information, this mammoth effort of inclusivity was accomplished to strengthen the essence that integration enriches humanity.

The 'Oneness in Diversity' project is a multilingual audio-visual educational resource in English, Hindi, and Punjabi. It presents the life narratives and spiritual messages of the saints whose voices of universal harmony are enshrined in the Guru Granth Sahib. The project includes metaphoric interpretations and musical renditions, in prescribed musicology, of 1,656 sabads (verses) of Guru Nanak, Bhagat Kabir, Bhagat Ramanand, Bhagat Ravidas, Sheikh Farid, Bhagat Namdev, Bhagat Jaydev, Bhagat Trilochan, Bhagat Sadhna, Bhagat Sain, Bhagat Pipa, Bhagat Dhanna, Bhagat Surdas, Bhagat Parmanand, Bhagat Bheekhan, Bhagat Beni, and Bhai Mardana. Commissioned in January 2023, this five-year initiative is scheduled for completion by December 2027.

The project emerged from the insights gained during the production of the 24-episode Guru Nanak documentary series, ‘Allegory, A Tapestry of Guru Nanak’s Travels’. That journey highlighted two important gaps: many existing translations of the Guru Granth Sahib remain largely literal, and there is no comprehensive audio-visual repository of all sabads (verses) rendered in their prescribed musicology. 'Oneness in Diversity' project seeks to address these gaps by creating a vast multilingual educational archive that offers a deeper, metaphorical understanding and makes this wisdom more accessible and meaningful for the next generation.

Encouraged by the response from seekers engaging with this generational content, the project is now being envisioned as a complete audio-visual and interpretive repository of the Guru Granth Sahib. The next phase, planned for 2027 to 2032, will expand the archive to include the remaining 4,300+ sabads verses), authored by Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan, Guru Tegh Bahadur, and the various Bhatts. This phase will also include life narratives of these additional contributors, placing their writings within a broader cultural, spiritual, and historical context.

Alongside this expansion, a dedicated search application for desktop and mobile is being developed to serve as a comprehensive generational search engine. It will enable users to explore all sabads (veres) of the Guru Granth Sahib through multilingual metaphoric interpretations, prescribed musical renditions, author-wise life narratives, and searchable thematic access. The aim is to create a living educational resource that supports reflection, learning, intergenerational engagement, and a deeper understanding of the universal wisdom embedded in the Guru Granth Sahib.

Legacy is what the future inherits. This work can only be sustained by community members who recognise the need to preserve, interpret, and share this endangered intangible heritage in a meaningful form for future generations. Become a part of this legacy initiative by supporting our efforts.
