LIFE AND METAPHORIC MESSAGES OF BHAGAT SURDAS

There are varied views about the identity of Bhagat Surdas, who was born around 1529 AD. Some state that he was a brahmin named Madan Mohan with the pen name Surdas. However, the popular narrative mentions him as a visually impaired spiritual poet who was well-versed in Sanskrit and Persian. He found solace in the company of mystics and in composing spiritual poetry. It is believed he breathed his last in Varanasi.

Bhagat Surdas’s spiritual message is inscribed in his 1 sabad (verse) in Guru Granth Sahib.
