LIFE AND METAPHORIC MESSAGES OF BHAGAT JAYDEV

Bhagat Jaydev is a 13th-century poet saint born in Kindu Bilva in the southern part of Bengal, now known as Joydev Kenduli. Bhagat Jaydev’s father was Bhojadev and his mother was Radhadevi. He composed and sang poetry of renunciation and detachment. Bhagat Jaydev and his wife, Padmavati set a precedent for marital fellowship. Both inclined toward the well-being of humanity, and as a team, they challenged injustice and discrimination in society. Firmly believing in gracefully accepting the will of nature, they strongly condemned and revolted against the tradition of ‘Sati’, a barbaric practice where a widowed woman was required to self-immolate in her husband’s pyre.

Bhagat Jaydev's spiritual message is inscribed in his 2 sabads (verses) in Guru Granth Sahib.
