LIFE AND METAPHORIC MESSAGES OF SHEIKH FARID
Sheikh Farid, also known as Ganj-e-Shakkar, meaning a treasure of sweetness, was born in 1173 AD in Kothewal, a village 10 km west of Multan in present-day Pakistan. He became a disciple of Sheikh Qutubuddin Bakhtyar Kaki. Having sought education in Kandahar and Baghdad, and thereafter spending time at Delhi and Faridkot, he finally
settled in a remote and uninhabited village called Ajodhan on the shores of the Sutlej River, which later came to be known as Pakpattan. Guru Nanak and Bhai Mardana, during their travels across Asia, visited Pakpattan on two occasions.
Sheikh Farid's spiritual message is inscribed in his 134 sabads (verses) in Guru Granth Sahib.
